Blog 36 - Who is God? - Part 3

This is the last blog for the year. It is written to help you plan for the coming year.

Answer the questions in the blog the best you can and purposefully make next year your most successful year with God. Success should be measured in the pleasure God has in your performance. Slow down on being busy with life and focus on knowing God this year.

Psalm 37:4 says to “Delight yourself also in Jehovah, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” It’s a nice promise for the coming year.

This has been a good and challenging year for Con and I. We will move in early 2019. Be in prayer for us.

Blog 35 - Who is God? - Part 2

When I was a young boy, I remember the fear I had when Mom told me she was going to tell dad about my bad behavior or when I chose to disobey him. My dad was a big figure in my life. The word “dad” alone brought me to attention, and I sought to obey him.

After I accepted Jesus as my Savior and Lord and God now the key one in my life, I made a decision to live my life in obedience to God

Since I respond to people in accordance with their appellation, I think I should have a major response of some kind when I hear, profess, and read the Word about the name of the Holy God. I normally don’t.

In the Lord’s prayer it says, “Hallowed be Your name”. Hallowed means “to make holy, that is, consecrate (mentally) to venerate – a feeling of awe, respect, etc. reverence”.  As I seek to obey God, I ask continually whether I see and respond to God in reverence? Is God in any part of my daily planning?

I think we are too casual about the person of God. He is like a comic book character to us. We think He is to be enjoyed and observed, but we don’t take His person too seriously.

What do you think should be your response when you of think/hear of God as:

  • Hallowed
  • Sovereign
  • The ultimate Judge who will judge you in the end
  • Creator of all people and things
  • Fearful
  • Merciful

Review these verses:
Romans 15:4 - For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

Galatians 3:24 - Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. When Job and Isaiah came to face with God, they went silent. How about you?

I would say, I think we need the Old Testament.

Blog 34 - Who is God? - Part 1

Recently I heard a pastor teach on the Old Testament and the Old covenant. He was for removing all barriers for people to come to Christ. One of those barriers he sees is the “Christian” emphasis on the need for giving up certain kinds of sin. He couched his talk saying “ we are not under obligation to obey or pay attention to the Old Testament commands”. He posits that the Christians are too judgmental. Of course, this teaching will lead you to disregard the Old Testament teaching. So, we ask ourselves, “in this teaching, what is the use of the old testament and the old covenant”?

Answer: For one, it teaches us the character and attributes of the living God.

Let me make 2 observations:
In Europe God is all but gone from the discourse of the people. The churches are empty, and God is dead. I see this drift in America also. We must be students of our God and those who revere and worship Him.
If we have no God, we have no need for Christ. To witness to someone who doesn’t believe there is a God is a waste of time. Christ ministry puts us in touch with the living God. No God, no need for Jesus.

To diminish the Old Testament is a dangerous path. We should be students of God’s thinking. We need the whole Bible. To take a stab at this, this blog takes on knowing our God from the old Testament.

Good reading and blessings on you. Be sure and do the application.

Gayle
